Volunteering for a Non-Profit Board

If you're planning on volunteering by joining a Non-Profit Organization's Board, here are a few things to consider:

It’s important to do your research…

  • Does the Organization’s mission, goals and values align with your own?
  • What are the time commitments (length of term, meetings, committee work, fundraising, travel, etc.)?
  • Does the Organization carry adequate Directors’ and Officers’ insurance?
  • What is the financial strength of the Organization?
  • Is the Organization in good standing with CRA and other government departments?
  • Do you understand the legal liability you would be taking on as a board member?
  • Have you considered the interpersonal relationship between you and the Executive Director?
  • Have you considered the interpersonal relationships among you and the other board members?

Asking these questions will help you determine ahead of time if you and the organization will be a good fit.
